Found in Translation

Found in Translation proposes an organization of low-income residential units that allow for a high number of beds and communal spaces above, as well as a significant amount of community, activity, and commercial space below on the ground plane. This is achieved through the translation of a typical courtyard into that of vertically oriented courtyards and residential spaces that interact with one another on a variety of different levels - line of sight, communal interior space, and social exterior space.

The project activates the existing urban fabric of Koreatown through a mixed-use development that encourages social interaction, economy, community and safety. Building units are designed to continually translate and connect at various orientations to allow for expansion and further development into the surrounding communities.
